Nota social di Luigi Soriani - presidente regionale Fipsas
Sunday 18 August was a very bad day, in the afternoon, after a forecast storm, the total death of almost all the remaining trout in the Mediterranean that had survived the flooding event at the regional fish factory of Cantiano in 2022 occurred due to the illegal leakage of some chemicals into the river water by unknown persons, which also caused a widespread death of ichthyofauna in the waterway of more than three river kilometers.
This anomaly was discovered in the early afternoon hours by technicians working within the structure of the Regional Fish Center of Cantiano, who, at the end of the storm, noticed a strange behavior of the salmon, part of which had taken on a very dark color and had adopted an anomalous swimming behavior.
At the same time as the first emergency operations, further inspections were carried out along the waterway by FIPSAS rangers and law enforcement officials to check for any illegal activities still in progress and to ascertain the general condition of the waterway, with the presence of dead trout even in them indicating that the pollution was having a harmful effect both on the fish in the fishery centre and on wild fish in the natural environment.
Although the analyses carried out on the water samples taken by the ARPA Marche are ongoing and investigations are continuing throughout the territory to identify those responsible, the bitterness of having suffered a severe blow to the local regional trout production in just a few years remains. , first with the damage to the fish farm in the flood of 2022, and now with the death of the few fish specimens that survived, making it necessary to start the artificial reproduction of this salmonid completely again from scratch with the proportions. shortening the times of obtaining eggs and trout to be planted in the rivers of the Marche.
It should also be noted that although the Marche Region is about to renovate the plant with an important redevelopment project due to be launched soon, this additional tragedy adds to the tragedy of the national institutional block on the cultivation of brown trout in inland waters with the exception of the Mediterranean Trout Conservation Project which would have allowed, at least for fishermen, to be able to carry out fishing activities and, at the same time, to provide support for fish production with the aim of supporting biodiversity and high-quality fish production in the most valuable Apennine streams.
It is only to be hoped that the Region, through its officials, will be able to manage this critical phase with all its capacity and competence so that fish production, sport fishing, the protection of biodiversity and the development of fishing tourism do not fall victim to the bureaucratic slowdown that has been, for years, strangling the fishing sector which, in principle, is responsible for the environmental damage caused to the fish fauna, but which in reality is the first to run and cry for the consequences linked to the choices and actions taken on the rivers. By other figures who call them in different ways, they are destroying them through acts of pollution but also through the famous interventions in the riverbed for extreme urgency or for safety reasons, which are incompatible with the survival of the ichthyofauna and the river ecosystem.
