Born and raised in Mondovi, Alessandro Piovano is a researcher at the Polytechnic of Turin and is among the finalists for the thirteenth edition of the Thursday National Science Prize. This initiative is implemented by CentroScienza Onlus which has been committed for years to highlighting the work of young Italian researchers who contribute to the development and innovation of our country through their activity. Seventy-one applications were received for the 2024 edition, 48 female and 23 female researchers from the main Italian universities and research centres. 131 judges evaluated the candidates and selected a shortlist of ten finalists on the basis of scientific merit. Among them, Alessandro Piovano, who is very interested in the environment and the circular economy, says about himself: “I like to delve deeper into understanding phenomena and pass on my skills to young people.” His project focuses on plastic conversion and reuse processes in energy storage devices.

On May 16 in Turin, at the Academy of Sciences, Alessandro Piovano together with the other researchers in the final will be asked to talk about his project in just over 6 minutes, trying to make it clear, direct and accessible to everyone. The entries will be judged by an artistic jury, consisting of 5 specialists and experts in scientific communication, and a popular jury, consisting of 5 classes from high schools.

The winner will receive a cash prize of €5,000 and the opportunity to talk about their research in front of a ThursdayScienza audience, with a dedicated conference in the 2024/2025 edition.
