The embassies of the United States and Canada have asked their comrades to explore the possibility of leaving the country in a hurry in the face of kidnappings and the continued activities of criminal gangs that have made personal security uncertain in Haiti.
In a statement issued through its portal, the US diplomatic representative in Port au Prince stressed that “the State Department is urging U.S. citizens to now make plans to leave Haiti through existing trade links.”
“US citizens – this is included – need to carefully assess the risks, such as leaving or staying in Haiti in light of the current security situation and infrastructure challenges.”
“Widespread shortage of fuel – can control essential services in times of emergency, including banks, money transfers, emergency medical care, internet and telecommunications and public and private transportation options”.
Finally, it is stated that “the US Embassy in Haiti cannot assist American citizens when they decide to leave without business options.”
In the same sense, the Canadian embassy sent an email to Canadians living on the island, where it said, “The situation is deteriorating and changing rapidly. If you are in Haiti, your presence is not necessary.
