The Accademia dei Lincei concluded the academic year 2022-2023 in June.
Recalling the floods in Emilia-Romagna and the war in Ukraine, the Academy awarded Professors Ugur Şahin and Ozlem Turici, physicians and co-founders of BioNTech, the exceptional Antonio Feltrinelli Prize of €250,000 for exceptional moral and humanitarian value in favor of the flood-affected population in Emilia-Romagna. He also reaffirmed his commitment to promoting science and diplomacy as tools to build a better future for all.
In his address, President Antonelli noted that science and diplomacy are essential tools for building a better future for all. The Academy wants to continue to promote these values and contribute to solving the problems facing humanity.
The Accademia dei Lincei has organized a series of conferences and initiatives to discuss the future of the European Union. The President of the Academy, Roberto Antonelli, emphasized that the European Union was born thanks to the vision of three pro-Europeans, Schumann, Adenauer and De Gasperi, and that it must continue to work to overcome nationalisms and build a better future for all European citizens.
The Academy also promoted various initiatives to address the problem of institutional reforms needed for the development of Italy and the Union. President Antonelli noted that the next generation EU is a great innovation, but the pandemic and war will require an extension of the PNRR beyond 2026 and a strengthening of Eurobonds.
At the beginning of July, the Colloquium on Public Research and the Future of Italy will take place at the Academy. President Antonelli stressed that research is essential to the country’s development and that the government must ensure adequate funding for public research.
In his speech, Roberto Antonelli, President of the Accademia dei Lincei, referred to the many urgency that looms over the country’s system, from public health to territorial integrity, to infrastructure, to many other major problems. He also stressed the importance of research and innovation, and reaffirmed the Academy’s commitment to promoting these values.
In the 2022-2023 academic year, the Academy organized about 160 events, including conferences, seminars, international conferences and exhibitions. The Chair emphasized in particular two issues in which the Academy found a special involvement: the environment and the pandemic.
In terms of the environment, the Academy has organized conferences on topics such as reforestation, circular economy, climate change and geothermal energy. It also published a climate report which it submitted to the Senate of the Republic.
In connection with the epidemic, the Academy has organized conferences and published papers on epidemic prevention, treatment and management. It also cooperated with the government and other institutions to find solutions to the problem.
Finally, the President thanked all members, staff and collaborators of the Academy for their commitment and sacrifice. He also announced that the Academy will continue to promote research and innovation, and contribute to solving problems facing humanity.
